History of the Waltz Building

The Waltz Building was constructed in 1936 as a Works Progress Administration improvement project on the grounds of Snohomish High School. Dedicated by the school district that May, it served for several decades as the school’s music room. Band, orchestra, choir, and glee clubs all rehearsed within its walls. The local Tribune noted that, once “ceiled with Celotex,” the building was virtually soundproof.

The two small offices at the front of the building are original: one was used by the band director and the other for instrument storage. Over time, the school partitioned portions of the main room into additional offices.

In 1983, the Snohomish Historical Society purchased the building from the school district for $118. With the support of a generous grant from longtime residents and Society members Bob and Mary Waltz, the building was moved five blocks south to its present home at 116 Avenue B. The three-day move carried the entire building through town on the back of a truck.

During the renovation, later interior partitions were removed and the spacious main room was restored to its original appearance. The building reopened as a rental venue in November 1984 and was named in honor of the Waltz family, owners of the Seattle-Snohomish Mill Company, which once stood directly south of town across the river. The Waltz Building has served the Snohomish community ever since.
